Vegetables prices shoot up on poll day eve

According to the secretary, certain vegetables are being brought in from Chikmagalur, Kolar, Chintamani and Rayalaseema.

Chennai: Not only will the city suffer with restaurants being shut on Monday due to polls, but those hoping to make purchases from the Koyambedu market will also have to find an alternative as it is expected to remain shut.

Preparing to take a day off Monday, the vegetable vendors raised the prices on Sunday. The prices, which had more than doubled last week, shot up even more due to the Government holiday. “Until last month, we would receive around 400 loads of vegetables every day. However, this month, we received only 120.

Monday being a government holiday, we received 160 loads on Sunday, which is practically that for two days. We were therefore left with no option than to raise the prices,” said S.S. Muthukumar, Secretary, Koyambedu Fruits and Vegetables Merchants’ Association.

According to the secretary, certain vegetables are being brought in from Chikmagalur, Kolar, Chintamani and Rayalaseema. “The supply in these places is now less and therefore, the loads we get are now also less,” he added. “The prices will remain the same until December,” he stressed.
