JP Nadda's Neet idea: Have special quota for Tamil Nadu students

Centre on Saturday categorically said that medical college aspirants should compulsorily appear for Neet.

CHENNAI: The Centre on Saturday categorically said that medical college aspirants should compulsorily appear for Neet and added that Tamil Nadu government could come out with a “special reservation policy” for students from state board or those with rural background. Union health minister J. P. Nadda made it clear that the Centre is not in favour of granting exemption to TN under any criteria. “I have been very clear that Neet is to be implemented and it is being implemented in every state And it is implemented here also,” he said on Saturday. In a chat with reporters here, he said “the pretension and issue which the Tamil Nadu government feels is that people coming from rural background will not be able to be adjusted in the admission process. For this I told them, that for people or students coming from the state board or rural background, they (state government) have got full freedom to have their own reservation policy and give special reservation so that people from rural areas are taken into medical education.”

When persisted if the exemption could be granted this year, the minister shot back, “ Reservation is state policy programme. And it is the state governments that have to think about it. We have told last year also and we are very clear that Neet is to be implemented. “
