Four-year-old dies after eating jelly toffee in Kozhikode

The food safety officials banned toffee after the incident. Police registered a case of unnatural death.

Kozhikode: A four-year-old boy died on Friday after eating a jelly toffee from a shop on Thursday. His mother, who also ate it developed uneasiness. She is being treated at the Government Medical College hospital.

Muhammed Yusufali, son of Basheer Palodayil and Suharabi, Kappad, travelled with his mother, grandmother and elder sister on Wednesday to Nallalam and on their way back, before catching a bus to Koyilandy, bought the toffee. Soon after tasting it, the kid disliked it and the mother threw it away, after tasting it. His sister and grandmother did not eat it, said the police.

On reaching home, the child developed uneasiness that worsened the next day. The family took the boy to a physician in Kappad who directed them to MCH.

However, police said, the boy was brought dead. The mother, was taken back home, without informing her about the son’s death. The food safety officials banned toffee after the incident. Police registered a case of unnatural death.

She was brought back to the same hospital on Saturday. The post-mortem was conducted on Saturday.

Police said that no other poisonous substances were found in the body of the boy and no other family members suffered food poisoning, hinting that the toffee could be the reason for the death. Food safety and health officials raided the shop in the mofussil bus stand where the toffee was sold and seized the unsold packets.

The manufacturers were identified as National Confectionery, Madurai. Manufactured on March 25, it was advised on the cover as permissible to use until May 25.
