Make rural service must for promotion of doctors: M Venkaiah Naidu

He said that people are unhappy with the doctors and medical services in government hospitals.

Nellore: Union minister M. Venkaiah Naidu on Friday called upon the state governments to make two year rural service a mandatory criteria for giving promotions to government doctors.

Mr Naidu was addressing a gathering after laying the foundation stones for Rs 4.33cr, 30-bedded community health centres at Vinjamuru and Venkatachalam at Venkatachalam. He said that people are unhappy with the doctors and medical services in government hospitals.

The Union minister said that he will not entertain any recommendations for the transfer of doctors unless they have served minimum two years in rural areas.
Referring to the advanced medical equipment being supplied to government hospitals and the various programmes launched by the Union government and state governments in health sector, Mr Naidu observed that they will not serve any purpose unless there is a change in the attitude of doctors. He called upon the legislators, ministers, officers and local body members to make surprise visits to hospitals to ensure good services to the poor.

Health minister Kamineni Srinivas, MLCs Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy and Vakati Narayana Reddy were present on the occasion. Earlier, Mr Naidu performed bhumi Puja for a sports auditorium being built at an estimated cost of Rs 4.80 Cr in Sivanthi Adityan Sports Academy at Peddaparia in Ogili mandal. He had a word of praise for MLC Vakati Narayana Reddy after the latter announced Rs 1cr donation for the academy.

Reacting to the severe drinking water crisis in Ogili mandal, he expressed his inability to do anything as the Centre is transferring related funds directly to the state governments.
