Hyderabad: Nurse suspended for using phone

The video was recorded and uploaded by a relative of one of the patients.

Hyderabad: A video of a nurse of Gandhi Hospital ignoring patients and remaining engrossed in her phone surfaced on social media on Thursday. The video was recorded and uploaded by a relative of one of the patients.

The video shows the nurse, who has been identified as Anjana, with earphones in her ears, constantly doing something on her phone, and refusing to budge from her seat. Dr Mamtha, a junior doctor, is seen sitting and writing records, refusing to attend to patients’ relatives’ requests. The nurse only unplugs her ears to acknowledge something that the doctor says.

When the video reached Dr Shravan Kumar, the superintendent of Gandhi Hospital, he suspended the nurse and launched an inquiry into the incident.

He said, “The nurse was a member of the temporary staff. She was immediately suspended. We are now looking into when the incident occurred, and who the person that was seeking assistance at the time was.”

The inquiry also will seek to find out if the nurse had a motive for choosing to ignore her patients — did she want to get even for some reason, or was there an actual dereliction of duty on her part?
