GHMC clears skyway
Hyderabad: With an overwhelming majority in the GHMC, the ruling TRS on Tuesday passed a resolution on the Rs 5,916 crore 40.83-km long Skyway, connecting the east and west points of the ORR, without discussion or objections from the Opposition. The proposed Skyway, a six-lane divided carriageway with service roads will connect Nagole to the ORR west. A retaining wall along the northern bank of River Musi river will be constructed, including interchanges.
The resolution on the multi-crore pet project of the government passed by the GHMC council has been sent to the government for approval. GHMC commissioner B. Janardhan Reddy said that connectivity from Chaderghat to Nagole and the ORR to Nagole is presently being done by NH-163 (Warangal highway) and NH-9 (Vijayawada highway). He said that these roads are congested with ribbon development along the highway causing enormous delays for through traffic.
“The road between Tipu Khan bridge to Chaderghat is in a poor shape, with 2-4 lane undivided roads, while western side connectivity between Tipu Khan bridge and ORR is presently being served by Chevella state highway and the Osmansagar radial roads. The existing inner ring road, which is expected to serve as bypass for the long-distance vehicles, is suffering from capacity constraints. The only alternative to the bypass for through long distance traffic is the ORR which is circuitous and very far from the city.
Considering this, and to decongest the city road from through /long distance traffic travelling, the East-West Corridor along the Musi as a Skyway is being developed.” Once the government gives the green signal, the GHMC will call for tenders and initiate the Skyway construction.
Info graphics: The proposed Skyway starts at ORR East near Bacharam and ends at ORR West near Narsingi, passing through major areas as Korremula, Nagole, Moosarambagh , Chaderghat , MGBS, Afzalgunj, Puranapul, Attapur Ring Road, Narsingi, along the Musi river.
2. Length of the East – West ORR skyway is 40. 83 km
3. The Skyway will be divided into three parts -- ORR East to Nagole Bridge (15. 650 km), Nagole Bridge to Tippu Khan bridge (18. 80 km) and Tippu Khan bridge to ORR West. (6. 38 km)
GHMC powerless as tricycles rule roost:
Despite introducing 2,000 ‘Swachh Autos’ for collection of garbage, the GHMC remains helpless in replacing the old system of tricycles. Tricycle owners are not allowing the autos to their “territory” since they fear that the autos will take away their source of income. The Corporation, to all purposes, has no solution to this.
This is making the waste segregation project ineffective since the tricycles have no separate chambers to dump bio and dry waste separately. Of the 2,000 Swacch Autos, 1,593 have been handed over to GHMC personnel. GHMC commissioner B. Janardhan Reddy said, “Presently the autos and tricycles collect garbage from 44 lakh households. Many colonies are paying the minimum collection fee.”
