Healthy baby diagnosed as sick
Hyderabad: Parents of a seven-day-old baby have accused Siri Chandana Diag-nostic Centre at Hayatnagar of giving wrong reports on their baby. The reports indicated a bilirubin of 12.36, pointing to severe jaundice, making it mandatory to put the baby in isolation for phototherapy.
Father of the baby Yadagiri Guntoju, a pharmacist, said, “My baby seemed a little ill after birth and was running a mild fever. Doctors recommended tests, which we got done at Siri Chandana Diagnostic Centre. When high bilirubin count came up, doctors said the baby had to be put in isolation.”
“To be on the safe side, I took the same samples and got them checked at another diagnostic centre, which showed bilirubin as 3.2, which is healthy,” Yadagiri said while being angry with the centre.
Anusha, mother, said, “Such wrong reports force parents to panic. What would happen if, based on wrong reports, doctors start treatment, which would needlessly threaten the life of the child? We demand that the medical and health department take severe action against the diagnostic centre,” she said.
She said the diagnostic centre had to take the blame for the doctors asking for the baby to be put in isolation.
Dr M. Sudhakar of the diagnostic centre said the variations occurred because one test was done with serum and the other without serum. For accurate results, both tests must be conducted with serum.
