Karur: A three-day cock fight spectacle commenced at Poolaamvalasu village, well known for this rural sport, near Karur on Friday, in which 2,350 cocks took part.
After a gap of five years, the cock fight was resumed, following the intervention of the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court.
In a similar event during the year 2014, two persons died of blood injuries suffered on being inflicted by a sharp knife tied to the leg of the cocks. Following this tragedy, holding of cock-fights was banned.
The owners of the cocks were today allowed into the arena only after a thorough check to ensure they carried no knives. The media people were also asked to leave the venue soon after the inaugural ceremony.
However, despite the court's direction to wind up the game on or before 4 pm every day, the organisers allegedly allowed the event to go on even after that deadline.
Worse, some of the cock-owners tied knives to the legs of their respective cocks before pushing them into the fighting arena, violating the norms, sources in Karur said. Elaborate security measures have been made for the conduct of the rural sport.
