Hyderabad: Cease order on blasting at mines

The bench noted that the green tribunal had directed the project proponent on October 3, 2018.

Hyderabad: The National Green Tribunal on Friday directed Singareni Collieries Company Limited not to carry out blast explosives at open cast mines in Bhupalpally.

The NGT bench headed by Justice Raghuvendra Singh Rathore was dealing with an application by Mr Nagavelli Rajalingamurthy, a resident of Bhupalpally district, challenging the inaction of authorities in taking precautions in open cast mining in Kakatiya Khani-II which was resulting in air, noise, water, land pollution, damaging fertile lands and depletion of ground water in the vicinity.

The bench noted that the green tribunal had directed the project proponent on October 3, 2018, to comply with the specific condition No. VIII which stated that: “It appears that at the time of blasting, noise level reaches the nearby villages since the three tier plantation undertaken by the project authority is in the initial stage of growth” and the recommendation of the ministry of environment.

The bench observed that, “It is rather strange that nowhere in their letter of approval of the amendment of environmental clearance (EC) condition No. VIII dated December 24, 2018, the MoEF chose to mention the conditions specified by the Directorate General of Mines Safety in their approval with regard to blasting in the mine area.”
