Hyderabad: Google Malayalam leads to needless row in Old City

Interestingly there are hardly any locals who understand Malayalam to take umbrage to the lyrics of the song.

Hyderabad: While the controversy over the controversial Malayalam song Manikya Malarayi Poovi rages in the Old City, interestingly there are hardly any locals who understand Malayalam to take umbrage to the lyrics of the song.

The case at Falaknuma police station was registered on Wednesday after a local engineering graduate, Muqeet Khan, translated the song on ‘Google’ and got to know the meaning. Besides, people got to know the meaning of the lyrics only after the English translation of the song was circulated on social media.

Mohd Farooq Taher of the Telangana Teachers’ Association said that very few schools private or government offer Malayalam as a language, particularly in Old City. “A few youngsters who go to Gulf countries pick up the language from Keralite friends there,” he said.

The language is not taught at the higher level and in junior or degree colleges as it has few takers. A principal of a degree college in Old City said that so far no one has come forward to learn Malayalam.
