Guntur: Use of poor light at surgery protested

Funds granted to improve facilities but not used.

GUNTUR: Leaders and activists of the YSR Congress, led by party MLA of East Guntur Md. Mustafa, staged a dharna in front of GGH seeking improvement of facilities and transfer of GGH superintendent Dr D.S. Raju Naidu in Guntur on Thursday. The MLA said the hospital development committee failed to utilise development funds and held Dr Raju Naidu responsible for the poor services. He inspected the operation theatres and was expressed dissatisfaction with the poor lighting system there. "The fruit vendors on the streets have rechargeable lights but GGH uses cell phone flash lights for operating a patient and this reflects the negligence of the authorities," he pointed out.

He said the doctors do not have any right to play with the life of patients by using poor lighting system during operations. "Operations may go wrong if adequate lighting is not there." The MLA said the operation theatres were dirty and feared patients undergoing surgeries there would contract new diseases due to the poor sanitation on the premises.

He lamented the mildew was spread in the operation theatre showing negligence towards cleaning the room. Mr Mustafa said funds were sanctioned for improving facilities in GGH but neither the officials nor the hospital development committee tried to use the funds properly. "There is no account showing use of funds," he said. He lamented that many of the medical equipment in GGH, including MRI, were not working. There was a heated argument between Mr Mustafa and Dr Raju Naidu and the MLA squatted in front of the superintendent office.
