Hyderabad: Traffic cops hike jail-time for encroachers

Traffic police would henceforth seek the closure of shops that repe-atedly violate anti-encro-achment law.

Hyderabad: Encroachers in Hyderabad continue violating law even after 40 of them were jailed in the past one week. Traffic police has observed with the help of GHMC app geo-tagging that many of the violators are continuing with their act even after getting jailed for the first time. Hence, the punishment will be increased henceforth.

Traffic police would henceforth seek the closure of shops that repeatedly violate anti-encroachment law. They have filed 60 cases against encroachments in the past one week, and 40 were jailed and fined by around Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000.

The traffic police has requested the business community and hawkers to cooperate with them in making Hyderabad an encroachment-free city.

DCP A V Ranganath said, “Jail term will be extended to one month or more, from the present one or two days. We will seek closure of the shops and whatever goods are caught outside on roads will be auctioned. We request hawkers to cooperate with us by not repeating their act.”

Additional commissioner, traffic, Jitender said, “Our intention is not to displace hawkers eki-ng out their livelihood on the footpath. Our effort is to make Hydera-bad encroachment-free.”
