Strike by government staff hits rolls verification

Voters should come forward to disclose repeat/multiple entries.

Chennai: Verification of electoral rolls has been affected due to the ongoing strike by government staff.

The public (election) department has instructed collectors to look into the issue so that the special drive aimed to ensure accuracy in electoral rolls is achieved ahead of Assembly polls, Chief Electoral Officer Rajesh Lakhoni said on Monday.
He requested voters to voluntarily come forward to disclose any repeat/multiple entries in electoral rolls. Similarly, a list of dead electors would also be prepared and verified.

He also urged relatives and neighbours of dead persons to apply for deletion of such entries from electoral rolls in Form 7 to the electoral registration officer concerned.

Efforts are on to rope in college students who will be turning 18 at the time of polls. On poll arrangements, he said about 75,000 EVMs have arrived in the state and another 30,000 additional machines will be brought from Jharkhand and Karnataka.

The CEO also said the Election Commission has disqualified 10 candidates of Assembly elections 2011 and 32 candidates of Lok Sabha elections for non-filing of expenditure account. The disqualified members cannot contest for three years.
