Season tickets in lieu of fines for ticketless travel in Nellore

The sale of season tickets came down considerably after the introduction of Palle Velugu buses.

Nellore: In a bid to make up the revenue loss in the short-distance passenger sector, SCR is asking staff to market season tickets.

Unable to bear the pressure, the staff has been forcing ticketless travellers caught at the stations to buy season tickets instead of imposing fines.

According to information, the number of passengers travelling short distances or purchasing unreserved tickets came down drastically in 20 stations in South Central Railways, Vijayawada division for the first time in 12 years, despite a steady rise in the annual passenger traffic.

The stations include Vijayawada, Eluru, Rajahmundry, Samalkot, Gudivada, Bhimavaram, Tuni, Chirala, Bapatla, Ongole, Kavali, Gudur and Nellore.

The sale of season tickets came down considerably after the introduction of Palle Velugu buses.

Nearly 30 per cent of short distance passengers have reportedly switched to Palle Velugu; daily commuters and people from the suburbs do not need to travel up to the railway stations, which is located far away from the village.

Some of the decisions of the railways such withdrawing de-reservation of three-tier coaches in which short-distance passengers were allowed to travel in the past, also led the passengers to switch over to buses.
