Mangaluru: For the farmers who were disappointed by the heavy rains, there is some silver lining. The shortage of vegetables in the market has resulted in farmers getting good money for the vegetables.

“This year we are able to get almost double the price we used to get for some of the vegetables in the region. For example, we used to sell Sambar cucumber at Rs 12 per kg. But this year farmers got Rs 60. Similar is the case with Scarlet gourd. The maximum price farmers would get was around Rs 20. This year farmers were able to get Rs 70. Even now the price is around Rs 50,” Roopesh, an agriculturist of Belthangady Taluk told Deccan Chronicle.

"Due to heavy rain in the region many crops were destroyed. There is a severe shortage of vegetables. But as there is good demand for the vegetables farmers who managed to get vegetables after the rain, or those who succeeded in protecting their crops are able to sell at a good price this year," he added.
