Sabarimala firebrand thrashed'

Mother-in-law was also hospitalised as she alleged that Durga had assaulted her.

Malappuram: Kanaka Durga, who along with Bindu Ammini made history by having darshan at Sabarimala, was attacked allegedly by her mother-in-law when she reached her home at Perinthalmanna here on Tuesday morning.

She hit Durga with a wooden stick around 7.30 a.m. for going to Sabarimala. The police who were providing security to her house took her to the district hospital at Perinthalmanna and later shifted her to the medical college hospital at Manjeri.

The mother-in-law was also hospitalised as she alleged that Durga had assaulted her, a charge which she denied. An employee of the civil supplies corporation, Durga returned home as her leave had ended on Tuesday.

So far she was leading a secluded life due to the threat of fringe groups which oppose young women’s entry at the temple. The BJP, RSS and Sabarimala Karma Samiti activists gathered in front of the medical college and started a protest against Durga chanting Ayyappa slogans.

The police registered a case against the woman as per the complaint of Durga. She and Bindu Ammini had participated in the ‘Aarppo Aarthavam programme’ in Kochi on Sunday.
