30 bullfighters hurt in Sulur during jallikattu event

At least 15 foreign tourists, nine from New Zealand and six from the US also came to witness the Tamils' traditional sport.

Tiruchy: At least 30 bullfighters were injured in a ‘jallikattu’ event (traditional bull fight) held at suburb of Suriyur near Tiruchy on Monday.

Police said 450 bulls and 600 bullfighters in and around Tiruchy district took part in the event. The veterinarians’ team rejected three bulls from the participation of the event as they were underage.

All the injured were given first aid at the venue itself and sis of them were later referred to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government hospital here. Tension prevailed for some time when the striking force policemen severely beat two local youths when they attempted to enter into the ground through “Vadivasal”, the exclusive entrance for the bulls.

However, police and other pacified the agitators. Similarly, the journalists and photojournalists who came there to cover the event argued with the officials, following the action of Tiruchy sub collector Kamalkishore who sent out a photojournalist of an English daily from the VIP’s dais.

At least 15 foreign tourists, nine from New Zealand and six from the US also came to witness the Tamils’ traditional sport. Among others, Tiruchy collector Mr. K. Rajamani and SP, Mr. Kalyan were present at the venue.
