Mangaluru: Finally, Bengre to get its rights

People in land between Falguni river and Arabian Sea being surveyed.

Mangaluru: The long standing demand of people living in Bengre village in Mangaluru for ‘Hakku Patra’ (records of rights) is likely to be fulfilled shortly.

Bengre is a narrow land strip situated between the Arabian Sea and the Falguni River. The stretch has three major habitations- Kasba Bengre, Thota Bengre and

Kudroli Bengre. This land is said to have been formed due to accumulation of sand from the river. Over the year many families depending on fishing settled here but without survey numbers and any records of right.

Recently the survey numbers were allotted by the government. Now the survey work to provide ‘Hakku Patra,’ has been started by revenue department officials. A team of 10 surveyors has started the work which may be over in 2-3 months.

“There are 2,000 houses in Thota Bengre, Kudroli Bengre and Kasba Bengre where people are living for decades and are dependent on fishing. The saddest part is that they are do not have records and are unable to avail government schemes. When they brought this to my notice, I assured to help them and we have started working on this,” Mangaluru City South MLA J.R. Lobo told DC.
