Telangana HC takes up PIL based on DC Speak Out page

CJ highlights two letters, calls top brass to court.

Hyderabad: The Speak Out page of Deccan Chronicle has moved the Telangana High Court to take up a suo motu public interest litigation regarding the condition of the city’s infrastructure.

Chief Justice Raghavendra Singh Chauhan directed the High Court Registrar to treat the Speak Out page as a taken-up PIL and asked the relevant departments and officials respondents to the PIL.

The High Court took cognisance of the December 2 edition of Speak Out, which carries readers’ letters regarding poor civic facilities with the headline ‘City Infrastructure Crumbl-ing’. The Court also took cognaisance of two letters, ‘Sunday market at Manikonda stinks’ and ‘Nightmare at Tolichowki flyover’.

DC reader Swathi Reddy, a resident of Manikonda, had complained about the situation on the Manikonda-Pullaguda Pipeline Road caused by the vendors who occupy more than half of the road, are very rude and do not move their carts.

She had said that the vendors were causing traffic jams. She said the garbage gave off a foul smell and asked the traffic police and GHMC officials, via Speak Out, to take necessary action.

Mr Naveen from Tolichowki in his letter had reported about the parking of autorickshaws and other vehicles haphazardly on the U-turn underneath the flyover at Tolichowki.

The High Court opined that these reports were desirable to be treated as public interest litigation and made the Chief Secretary, the principal secretaries of home and municipal administration, the Director-General of Police, the police Commissioner of Hyderabad and Cyberabad, the deputy commissioner of traffic police, the GHMC commissioner and collectors of Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy district as the respondents.
