Hyderabad: People of Assamese origin protested on Sunday at Dharna Chowk against the Citizenship Amendment Act as they fear that 13 lakh Bangladeshi Hindus will be granted citizenship in their state which will dilute the native culture.
There are more than 15,000 Assamese working in Hyderabad in the information technology, hospital and hotel industries in the city.
They are not coming forward as an organisation but independently to protect their land and rights in the state.
The Assamese are contacting each other through social media and about 200 are to gather for peaceful protests against the CAA and NRC.
An Assamese protestor said, “The NRC has clearly shown that there are 19 lakh illegal citizens in Assam. From these 13 lakh are Hindus and they are going to be given citizenship which is not fair. They are already encroaching on our lands and on our rights. In many areas in Assam, there is demand for Bangla as a language in the school. Why? Our culture and our traditions are different but are being overpowered by these illegal migrants.”
They stated that they do not get this feeling of encroachment and imposition of ‘different culture’ from those who come from elsewhere in India. There are Marwaris and people from Bihar, Maharashtra and Gujarat who have settled in the state but do not impose themselves on the people’s culture and traditions.
The threat is being felt from ‘Bangladeshi’s’ as it will change the social fabric. The people of Assam in the city were of the opinion that if these ‘lakhs of Bangladeshis’ are allowed now it will change from time to time for the ‘politics of votes’.
“We do not want these migrants as they are encroaching our lands and our culture. We will not accept CAA,” said the members.
