East Coast Railway assures security for women passengers
Visakhapatnam: Security of women passengers will be accorded highest priority by Indian Railways and all possible steps are being undertaken on continual basis to enhance their safety, East Coast Railway divisional railway manager Mukul Saran Mathur said here on Friday.
He was addressing students of Gitam Deemed to be University in a gender sensitisation programme on ‘Women’s security over Indian Railways’ jointly organised by Gitam Women Empowerment Cell and Railway Protection Force (RPF).
He spoke about the security aspects followed by Indian Railways in recent years. Mr Mathur said that security of tourists, especially foreign tourists, has been accorded equal priority. He informed that CCTVs will be provided at all stations, and on trains, to enhance security.
“We are providing sanitary napkins, waiting rooms exclusive for women, special coach for women passengers are other initiatives,” he added.
RPF senior divisional security commissioner Jitendra Srivastava said that RPF has been using social media for redressal of passenger grievances extensively. The recruitment process for 4,000 lady constables has been initiated by Indian Railways for women passenger security.
Gitam School of Law director Prof Y. Satyanarayana said that effective implementation of legislations was the main task, and gender sensitisation is important to implement the laws. He said that district legal service authority should extend help to women whenever necessary.
East Coast Railway divisional finance manager P.Priyanka, Gitam Women Empowerment Cell chairperson Prof. P. Sheela, RPF assistant security commissioner K.P. James and others addressed the students.
