Chennai: 2 women die as balcony of house collapses
Chennai: Two elderly women died after the balcony of the house collapsed and fell on them here in Thiruvanmiyur on Thursday evening. The incident happened when they were reportedly standing outside their house on the ground floor when the balcony fell on them. A four-year-old girl suffered injuries in the incident.
The deceased have been identified as Mariammal( 70) and her relative Tulaisamma(71).
Police said Mariammal resided on the first floor of a two-storey building at Poondiamman Koil Street in Tiruvanmiyur along with her son.
According to police, on Thursday evening Tulasiamma, a relative of Mariammal had come to meet her and the duo was talking on the ground floor. Suddenly, the balcony of the second floor collapsed and they were stuck inside the debris.
In the melee, another four-year-old girl Tamilselvi, who was also playing in the ground floor sustained severe head injuries.
However, the two women die on the spot and their bodies were sent to Royapettah government hospital for post-mortem.
Police said Mariamman's cousin, Kannan, 79, was the owner of the two-storey building which is more than 80-year-old and accommodates two houses. The house is situated in a congested lane and the locality has around 250 houses.
A case has been registered with the police under IPC section 304 (a) and further investigations are on.
