Chennai: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has informed the Madras high court that it has floated tenders to the tune of Rs 13.37 crore to restore /repair the road from Poonamallee to Chennai central railway station.
The NHAI made this submission in response to a public interest litigation from advocate V.S.Suresh, which sought a direction to the NHAI to take steps in a war footing manner to inspect urgently the entire stretch and also to repair the National Highway-4 from Poonamallee sub court till Sangam theatre in Poonamallee high road to Central railway station and repair the same.
When the PIL came up for hearing before the first bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice R.Hemalatha, the NHAI submitted various communications issued in this regard and informed the Bench that tenders were invited for an amount of '13.37 crore and the work will commence immediately upon approval of the bid and signing of the agreement at the earliest.
Recording the submissions, the bench said it also appears that there were breaches committed by the previous contractor. Since steps have already been initiated, no order needs to be passed in this petition. However, considering the inconvenience of the public, it was expected that the authorities concerned would take immediate steps for restoration and repair of the road in question, the bench added and disposed of the PIL.
