Hyderabad: Beti Bachao fails to curb child marriages

The state has an obligation to protect girls. It is due to the complicity by the state that children are forced into marriage.

Hyderabad: ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao and Lakshmi Kalyanam’ are token gestures, said professor Shanta Sinha, former chairperson of the national commission of protection of child rights.

After releasing the book ‘Voices of married girls in Telangana’ on Thursday in Hyderabad, Prof Shanta Sinha, co-writer of the book, said, “Soft schemes like Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao and Kalyana Lakshmi don’t prevent child marriages. The state complicity is primarily responsible for child marriages.”

“The state has an obligation to protect girls. It is due to the complicity by the state that children are forced into marriage,” she further added.

“The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act (PCMA) 2006 has serious flaws. Make child marriage totally avoidable in the Act,” she further added.
