Call to residents to keep Rajahmundry garbage-free

Nearly 165 metric tonnes of domestic garbage was being generated in the city. Civic workers were engaged to collect and dispose it.

Rajahmundry: Municipal commissioner V. Vijaya Rama Raju appealed to residents of multi-storied apartments to keep their surroundings clean with proper disposal of domestic garbage. At a meeting held with representatives of apartment welfare associations here on Thursday, the commissioner advised them that ask their watchmen to hand over domestic garbage to civic workers who arrive there for collecting garbage in vehicles instead of dumping it in dumpers.

He pointed out that a Central team would be arriving in the city to conduct Swachh Survekshan Survey 2018 in January and called upon the residents to cooperate with the civic administration in maintaining the city neat and clean. He asked apartment residents to set up compost making units in free space on their premises so that they can produce compost to be used for cultivating vegetables and plants in roof gardens.

He pointed out that nearly 165 metric tonnes of domestic garbage was being generated in the city. Civic workers were engaged to collect and dispose it safely. He assured efforts to set up 12 vermi compost units in the city to handle domestic garbage and convert it as vermi compost.

When residents asked the commissioner about an underground drainage system, the official responded by saying that as it was estimated to cost Rs 600 crore, they would send proposals to the Centre to sanction funds for its execution.

The commissioner said that the civic staff was taking up sensitization drive in the city advising people to keep the city neat and clean by disposing domestic garbage properly instead of dumping it in drains or on public roads.The municipal commissioner warned action against those who uproot trees for construction of houses without permission from the civic authorities.
