AP discom gets national award for power saving

Union power minister Piyush Goyal presented the award to EPDCL CMD M.M. Nayak at a function, marking national energy conservation day.

Visakhapatnam: The Andhra Pradesh Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited (APEPDCL) has bagged the first prize in the national-level competition on ‘energy conservation’ in the ‘electricity distribution companies’ (Discoms) category.

Union power minister Piyush Goyal presented the award to EPDCL CMD M.M. Nayak at a function held in New Delhi on Wednesday, marking national energy conservation day.

Mr Goyal appreciated the efforts of Mr Nayak and his team for energy conservation. “I want to thank Goyal and Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu for their encouragement and introduction of energy conservation schemes.

With these energy conservation measures and schemes, the discom was able to save nearly 626.18 million units of power a year. For instance, the discom consumed 16,718 MU in 2015-16. In the present year, up to November, it consumed only 12,006 MU of power,” Mr Nayak said.

Mr Nayak said the distribution of 79.20 lakh LED bulbs to 39.60 lakh consumers in five districts of the discom limits was one of the best achievements in saving 644.10 MU of power by November this year. The discom pipped 47 other discoms across the country by bringing down T&D losses to 5.48 per cent, which is the lowest in the country, he said.
