HYDERABAD: Priests and devout at the Chilkur Balaji Temple erupted with joy following the Supreme Court’s announcement on Thursday that various religious issues pertaining to entry of women into the Sabarimala temple need to be re-examined.

“Truly, it is a great victory and relief for devotees of Sabarimala. The judgment has been referred to a review by a seven-judge bench,” Archaka Rangarajan of the temple said.

The verdict comes just two days ahead of the Sabarimala Temple reopening for the two-month-long ‘mandalam’ season from November 16.

On September 28, 2018, the Supreme Court had lifted the ban that prevented women and girls between ages of 10 years and 50 years from entering the shrine in Kerala. It had held that this centuries-old practice was unconstitutional.
