Ooty: Dr. B. Manivannan, Assistant Professor of Tamil, Government Arts College here, has been bestowed with Tamil Nadu Government’s Library Enthusiast Award in recognition of his service to the promotion of library culture among students and other people in the Nilgiris. Dr. Manivannan, hailing from Mel-Kundah Badaga village, is a noted name in the hills for his exemplary interests in Tamil literature, book writing and short film making. He has now added another jewel in his crown through his tireless works in promoting library culture.
Claiming that he is the only person from the Nilgiris district to have been chosen for this award, he said that he received the award from school education minister K.A. Sengottaiyan at a function held in Chennai, on Wednesday morning.
Stating that he encouraged the enrolment of a little more than a thousand students to become members of the district library in Ooty, and encouraged around a dozen to become patrons of the library, Dr Manivannan said that next to the class room, it is the library which lays the platform for gaining and enriching knowledge. A regular visit to the library makes a person become a knowledge power house on a variety of subjects.
“Books and newspaper reading and library culture will help avoid distractions in the cyber world and helps the mind to focus on ethical and moral values, besides gaining knowledge constantly,” he added....
