Firecrackers: Nine-year-old succumbs to burns
Chennai: A nine-year-old succumbed to burns on Tuesday night at Kilpauk Medical College sustained while firing crackers on Deepavali.
The deceased boy has been identified as Raghuraj (9), a resident of Vinayagapuram near Nerkundram, and a class 3 student in a private school at Nerkundram.
The incident happened when Raghuraj was bursting crackers with his brother Saranraj (7) ahead of Deepavali outside their house on November 5.According to sources, he picked up a ‘Sutli Bomb’, which had not exploded, thinking it had not been lit. As he playfully bit it, the cracker went off causing serious injuries to the boy.
Raghuraj suffered severe burns on his mouth and other parts of his body. He was admitted to Kilpauk government hospital with 28 per cent burns, while his brother who stood next to him also suffered 9 per cent burns. Meanwhile, on Tuesday night, Raghuraj succumbed to his burns at the hospital. The Koyambedu police have registered a case and further investigations are on.
