Bengaluru: Narayana Health City opens doors to Afghan woman

She will undergo free treatment for Hepatitis C, highly placed sources in the Hospital told Deccan Chronicle.

Bengaluru: Sharbat Gula, the green-eyed Afghan woman, who made the cover of National Geographic magazine in 1985, arrives in the City for treatment at Narayana Health City by the end of this week.

She will undergo free treatment for Hepatitis C, highly placed sources in the Hospital told Deccan Chronicle, with the facility still waiting for the Afghan Embassy to send them her medical reports and confirm her arrival dates.

“Recently, the Afghan Embassy approached us and asked if we could treat the patient. Chairman Dr Devi Shetty, willingly offered to help. However, we are yet to get her medical records," the source said.

Sharbat Gula, who once epitomized the plight of thousands of Afghan refugees, and is now a mother of three, was arrested by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Oct 26 from her house in Peshawar's Nauthia area for allegedly forging a Pakistani Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC).

Dr Shaida Abdali, Ambassador of Afghanistan to India had said on Twitter, "Touched by Narayana hospital in Bangalore, offering the Iconic Sharbat Gula free of cost treatment and hospitality: "friend in need". The Iconic Afghan Sharbat Gula will soon be in India for medical treatment free of cost - Thank you India for being a true friend! @MEAIndia."
