Bengaluru: It was an anxious Sunday for the Whitefield traffic warden Manju Mehra, who rescued a two-year-old girl wandering barefoot on the street and was safely reunited her with her parents, in Whitefield Police station limits.
The incident happened in Sai Layout in South Bengaluru’s Whitefield area on Sunday evening at about 4 pm.
Mehra told Deccan Chronicle, “While I was watering plants in my balcony, I happened to notice the minor girl walking unattended. I told my security guard to stop the girl till I climb down and take her into my custody.”
She further said, “The girl was tired and hungry. I took her in my lap and knocked around 50 houses in the neighbourhood to find her home or parents. Meanwhile I informed the control room and dialed 100. When I didn’t find any family member I took her my house, washed her face, feet and fed her before taking her to the jurisdictional police station.”
The police tried talking to the child but she couldn’t answer and slept off in Mehra’s lap. “I am a mother of a girl child. I know what parents might be undergoing. Her safety was the prime concern and I didn’t want her to fall into wrong hands. I was anxious whether her parents will find a way to reach her or not. The wait lasted over three hours at the police station. I was wandering what if the parents did not come to know. I wasn’t ready to send the child to any child centre and was ready to keep her with me,” Mehra added.
Police said that however around 7 p.m. the parents Girish Kumar and mother Soumya, who hail from Mysuru and had come to Bengaluru on a visit, came to jurisdictional police station in search of her daughter and found their child safe.
Probe reveals that the family had come to visit a relative in Bengaluru. “The child was safely handed over to the parents after checking their credentials,” said a police officer.
