8,000 participate in ReGreen Chennai marathon

Around 8,000 participants from different age groups hit the roads to encourage tree plantation and bring attention to the need for a green cover.

Chennai: ReGreen Chennai, set up in January 2017 to take remedial measures to offset the green cover loss the city suffered due to cyclone Vardah, hosted the second edition of ReGreen Chennai marathon on Sunday.

Around 8,000 participants from different age groups hit the roads to encourage tree plantation and bring attention to the need for a green cover.

Actor Shakthi Vasudevan was among those who showcased their support for the cause. A lot of children and youngsters took part in the race and gave them an opportunity to become a responsible citizen. All participants planted one sapling, promising a rise in green cover in the city.

ReGreen's focus is to plant only those trees that will grow six feet and above. Palmyra trees are known for their longevity (of more than 100 years). The trees efficiently address all the immediate concerns surrounding drought, climate change mitigation, reducing the impact of floods and cyclones. The benefit from planting palmyra is their direct ability to conserve water and regulate the
underground water table, including the ability to mitigate saline water intrusion.

Besides, they also have proven potential to generate income through the by-products - from palm sugar to nungu (ice apple). Unlike other contenders, palmyra trees are highly drought-resistant and pesticide-free.

These attributes give them the name 'God's own tree', says Fr. Jegath Gasper, Founder - Vision Head, ReGreen Chennai and Palmyra Nation.
