Gauri Lankesh murder: Will sketches really help SIT?

The investigators should be really lucky to get leads about the accused based on sketches, a senior police official said.

Bengaluru: The SIT probing the murder of Gauri Lankesh have come up with three sketches of two suspects in the case. But, the question is whether these sketches will help public in identifying the real culprit and pass on the message to the police?

Going by the cases in the past in which police failed to trace the accused and sought information from the public, the chances of identifying the assailants just with the help of the sketches are very less. While the sketches were computer generated in previous cases, including that of Dr M.M. Kalburgi’s murder, the SIT has come up with the sketches manually drawn by professional artists.

“The footage in which the suspects’ faces were visible were gathered, they were improved with the help of various software and were converted into negative image. Based on this, the artists came up with the sketches. The eyewitness also confirmed that the assailants looked very similar to the sketches,” an SIT official said.

However, the police have not pinned all their hopes on the sketches. “There have been many cases in the state and the country, where the police have sought information from the public based on sketches. But, the success rate in such cases is really less. The investigators should be really lucky to get leads about the accused based on sketches,” a senior police official said.
