Signature campaign on Uniform Civil Code

Muslim organisations started collecting signature from the people.

Hyderabad: Several Muslim organisations of the city which are opposing the moves by the Centre to introduce Uniform Civil Code in the country have launched signature campaigns to express their opposition to the UCC. Responding to the call given by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board to oppose the moves on Uniform Civil Code, Muslim organisations started collecting signature from the people.

Hyderabad-based Seerat-un-Nabi Academy, which has been taking up awareness campaign across the country by organising public meetings, launched a signature campaign exclusively for Muslim women, against the stand taken by the Centre in the Supreme Court on the issue of ‘Triple Talaq’. Academy chairman Syed Ghulam Samdani Ali Quadri said, “Apart from this signature campaign exclusively for women, we will start another campaign for both women and men from 5 pm of October 16 from Dargah Hazrat Nizamuddin in Delhi against the UCC.” He said a dharna will also be organised on October 19 at Jantar Mantar in Delhi against the UCC.

Elsewhere, the Hyderabad-based Minorities Rights Protection Forum has also been obtaining signatures from members of the Muslim community stating: “We strongly protest any attempt to implement UCC in democratic and secular India”. Syeda Aquila Khamooshi, the woman member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, said that they have also started signature campaign against the the stand taken by the Centre over Triple Talaq and polygamy and also opposing the UCC. So far, several hundred Muslim women have participated in the campaign.
