Chennai: Special patrol vans to keep tabs on city hoardings

The city corporation has also issued zone-wise helpline numbers where people can lodge complaints against such hoardings.

CHENNAI: The Madras high court’s stern warning and directive to the corporation and police officers, as well as the immense public outrage following the death of 23-year-old Chennai techie, Subhasri, due to a hit from an unauthorizsd banner put up by AIADMK functionary Jayagopal, has seemingly had the desired impact, with officials announcing the formation of a special team to keep a check on the increasing number of such illegal structures.

The team will be provided with three patrol vans, which would monitor the 15 zones in the city corporation, five each, and report and act on the illegal banners and hoardings.

Notably, K. Prakash, Commissioner, Greater Chennai Corporation, has issued a stern warning to violators of the banner rule, just about a week back. Violators are liable to one-year imprisonment in addition to fine of Rs. 5,000 for each banner, he had said.

The licence of the company concerned and the printing press would also be suspended. Further, those wishing to put up a banner should avail permission from the city corporation first, and the dimensions, as well as the spacing between the banners, should be in accordance with the criteria listed out by the corporation.
