KITE: 522 schools listed damaged in flood

As many as 271 rooms, including classrooms, office rooms and laboratory, have been completely destroyed.

Thiruvananthapuram: A total of 522 school campuses, including high school, higher secondary and vocational higher secondary classes, have been affected by the floods, as per a report of Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE).

As many as 271 rooms, including classrooms, office rooms and laboratory, have been completely destroyed. While 585 rooms have critical damage, 505 sustained minor damage. Compound walls measuring a total of 16.28 km were fully destroyed while walls measuring seven km suffered serious damage and another 2.2 km of walls minor damage.

Heavy damage was reported for 506 toilets and over 92 bio-diversity parks. In case of water sources, 74 wells, 101 water tanks and 15 borewells became completely unusable. The KITE collected the details of the damage along with pictures in Sampoorna within two days, Mr K. Anvar Sadath, vice-chairman and executive director of KITE, told Deccan Chronicle.

The creation of the digital database can be used for necessary interventions, he said. Ernakulam, Alappuzha, Pathanamtitta and Thrissur districts reported considerable damage of IT equipment. KITE collated the details by September 3. A total of 567 laptops, including 235 which were recently deployed to schools as part of the Hi-Tech School and its piloting, were damaged severely.

Similarly 148 multimedia projectors, including 46 as part of the Hi-Tech School project were damaged. These equipment are being inspected in detail at the respective district offices of KITE.

It has requested the original equipment manufacturer or suppliers to either repair or replace the equipment as part of their social commitment or through CSR initiatives. In addition to these, 981 desktop computers were damaged and these are being inspected at school level to be taken up in hardware clinics in association with KELTRON. It has also been reported that 175 printers and 113 UPS were damaged in the floods, said Mr Sadath.
