Chennai: The state government informed the Madras high court on Thursday that action has been initiated against teachers agitating along with other state government employees, demanding implementation of Seventh Pay Commission recommendations.

The department of primary education submitting before Justice N. Kirubakaran, said that the government was paying Rs 700 crore towards their salary. The department has initiated disciplinary proceedings against the primary school teachers engaged in protest.

Over 33,487 primary school teachers had not reported for duty as of Wednesday, given six recognized unions along other un-recognized unions taking part in the agitation.

Showcause notices have been issued to 43,508 government teachers. The department will consider the days on which they agitated as days of unapproved leave. The government will also not pay them salary for such days.

The teachers receive salary from Rs 21,000 per month and pay Rs 700 crore towards their salary, which is 19.42 per cent of total budget. The judge adjourned the matter to Friday for further hearing.
