Hyderabad: 7-year-old corosal blamed for blast

Lack of repairs led to explosion, allege workers.

Hyderabad: Due to high pressure on a single unit at the liquid petroleum branch of HPCL, a gas leakage was reported which has lead to the explosion of more than 10 cylinders.

Nearly 50 workers were working inside the unit at the time of incident. HPCL officials said that no casualties were reported.

Mr G L Naik, coordinator of HPCL, said that the cause behind fire is yet to be identified and investigations are on to find out the reason.

However, sources said that to meet the demand from Dasara, the management had cancelled leaves of workers and opted for three shifts instead of two per day.

The sources said that the incident took place at the corosal, which has the capacity to fill 66 cylinders per minute but the machine is seven years old. The machine was working in full swing to meet the demand from the upcoming festival.

According to the sources, as the machine was old, it was serving only 120 loads of truck per day. Due to this, the management cancelled the leaves of the worker and made them work three shifts. Workers alleged that lack of repairs and minor leakages lead to the explosion.
