Bihar govt to challenge Shahabuddin's bail in Supreme Court

Nitish Kumar government in Bihar is now planning to file a petition in the Supreme Court to challenge his bail.

Patna: Gangster-turned-politician and RJD leader Shahabuddin, who was released from the jail on Saturday, may face major legal hurdles as the Nitish Kumar government in Bihar is now planning to file a petition in the Supreme Court to challenge his bail.

According to sources, the state government was taking such measures after district administration sent a report to headquarters that witnesses were scared after his release from jail. JD(U) sources said that police headquarters acting on the report directed officials to take security measures to ensure that the law and order condition in Siwan remains under control.

Siwan Police has also launched a probe to find out whether bail norms were violated during or after his release from the jail. Speaking on the issue SP Siwan Saurav Sah said, “We are investigating the matter and if we find any violation we will move for cancellation of his bail”.

Meanwhile, the JD(U) released a statement on Wednesday stating that the “state government was taking legal steps to challenge the bail of alleged gangster Shahabuddin”.

Speaking on the issue, JD(U) spokesperson Ajay Alok said, “This is a normal procedure that if the state government is not satisfied with the bail of any person it goes into an appeal in higher court and this will be followed even in the case of Shahabuddin”.

Shahabuddin, who was granted bail in connection with murder of eyewitness Rajiv Roshan, has more than 39 criminal cases against him. Rajiv Roshan was sole eyewitness in the murder of his two brothers Girish and Satish who were killed after they were given acid bath on August 16, 2004 in Siwan.
