Tech varsity brings norms for B Design

Students who join B Design can also avail B Des honours by taking more credits.

Thiruvananthapuram: A.P J. Abdul Kalam Technological University, formed for affiliating technical education colleges, has brought out Academic Regulations for B Des courses newly sanctioned by the AICTE.

The course incorporates the various aspects of design with specialisations like interior design, furniture design, graphic design and product design. They have also released the syllabus for the first and second semester of the course.

University Registrar G. P. Padmakumar told Deccan Chronicle that College of Architecture, Trivandrum and the TKM Engineering College, Kollam had requested the university for starting B Des course. Of them, College of Architecture will begin the programmes this year itself, said Mr Padmakumar.

Students who join B Des can also avail B Des honours by taking more credits and a minor degree along with B Des specialising in any subject.

All B. Des students are eligible to register for B. Des (Honours). However, their mandatory CGPA at the end of the eighth semester have to be 7.5 or higher to be eligible for the award of B. Des (Honours).

The B. Des(Honours) registration will be along with that of the fourth semester.

If a student fails in any course, including the one chosen for B. Des (Honours), they will not be eligible to continue the B. Des (Honours).

However, the additional credits earned by the student will be included in the grade card but will not be considered in calculating the CGPA. The student will have to get an additional 20 credits to be eligible for the award of B. Des (Honours).

All B. Des students will also be eligible to register for Minor in Design. The Minor in Design registration will be along with that of the third semester.

If a student fails in any course of the minor, he will not be eligible to continue the B. Des Minor. However, the additional credits and grades earned by the student will be included in the grade card but will not be considered in calculating the CGPA.

The student will earn an additional 20 credits to be eligible for the award of B. Des Degree along with a Minor degree.

These regulations will be applicable for students admitted from 2019. The duration of the regular B. Des programme will normally be of four academic years spanning eight semesters including internship as per the curriculum.

Every academic year will have two semesters from July 1 to December 31 (odd semester) and January 1 to June 30 (even semester). Each semester will have a minimum of 72 working days. The second half of the seventh semester will have a minimum of 45 working days.

The academic programs of the University follow the credit system. The general pattern is as below: one hour lecture per week- one credit, one hour tutorial per week- one credit, one-hour Studio per week, one credit Up to three hours Practical/ Workshop/Drawing per week one credit, Above three hours Practical/ Workshop per week two credits.

There will be End Semester Examinations (ESE) in every semester for all courses as prescribed under the respective curriculum. The University will conduct the End Semester Examinations for all theory-based subjects. Semester classes should be completed at least ten days before the commencement of the ESE.
