Khammam: Rains expose flaws in 2BHK houses
Khammam: There are scores of complaints from beneficiaries of the 2BHK houses during the monsoon. The complaints include falling roofs, leakages of rainwater and floors breaking.
After the cost of each 2BHK house has been enhanced from Rs 5.04 to Rs 6.04 lakh due to the 18 per cent GST on building material, one per cent cess on labour charges and another one per cent on other charges, the contractors are completing the houses in a hurry. There are allegations that the curing was not done properly and many other lacunaes in wall constructions.
The government handed over 2BHK houses to 6,000 beneficiaries in the erstwhile Khammam district. Many of them are residing in it. The construction defects were exposed as incessant rains were witnessed in the district in the first week of August.
The complaints came from Yellandu, Kamepalli, Kusumanchi, Enkoor, Paloncha, Julurpad, Konigerla and Bonakal mandals.
According to reports, about 100 beneficiaries vacated their houses during the rains as there was severe water leakage.
These discrepancies have been witnessed in 10 mandals including Yellandu and Karepalli. The defects in the 2BHK housing came to light during the grievance day, which is being organised every Monday. The officials ordered an inquiry into the defects and sought a report.
The contractors say that they faced various problems during construction and that the sand allocated to the 2BHK was being shifted to other construction works.
Congress leader V. Narasimha Rao said that the government should repair the defected houses and give them back to the beneficiaries who vacated them.
