Rains drown Kozhikode

Dist gets 86 mm rain on Tuesday.

Kozhikode: Many areas in the city, including Mavoor road, Thondaya, Palayam and mofussil bus stand, were submerged following torrential rain on Tuesday. Collector U.V. Jose said owning to landslides in various parts of the district, especially high ranges like Thamarassery and Wayanad ghat, the vehicular movement will be restricted and night rides avoided. The district received 86 mm of rain on Tuesday.

The rains starting from June has so far claimed the lives of 22 people in the district-- two in Kozhikode corporation limits and 15 at Thamarassery. Fourteen of those killed were victims of the landslide at Kattipara in June.

Over five people are missing at various places. The search for a 15-year-old boy from Ennadu near Puthupadi in the hill ranges of Kozhikode was still going on.

Transport through Kakkayam- Thalayad road will be stopped for a while as the road has been damaged completely. “Relief funds and help are flowing to the camps and the district administration,” the collector said.

Mr V.K.C. Mammed Koya, MLA, handed over Rs 1 crore to the district administration for relief activities.

Floods wash away Onam

The government has decided to cancel or simplify various programmes and Onam celebrations in view of the rain havoc in the state.

Agriculture Minister V.S. Sunil Kumar has directed the district administration to cancel the events in connection with the Farmers’ Day meet scheduled for August last week. The function will be limited to distributing the best farmer award, given every year to promote agriculture.

“Every year we host a slew of events during the ten-day Onam celebrations in the city,” said collector U.V. Jose. “But we will miss the events this time and the funds saved will be transferred to the relief activities.”

Search on for missing student

A UKG student of Global Public School, Eyyadu, has gone missing on Monday. He was identified as Muh-ammed Nisan, 7, son of Muhammed Ali of Eyyadu.

Suspecting that the boy might have drowned in the lake near the school, the local people and fire force officials from Narikunni started a search. According to police, the boy was not seen after the school closed on Monday. The police registered a case based on the complaint .

The lakes have been overflowing for last few days. Owing to bad weather and power failure, no search could be conducted on Monday.
