No excess students at CEG, says Anna University VC MK Surappa

Through single window counselling, 1,195 students were admitted and 19 students were admitted through other states quota.

Chennai: Ruling out any irregularities in the admissions to College of Engineering, Guindy last year, Anna University Vice-Chancellor M.K. Surappa said, “All the admissions were done as per the rules of the university and there are no excess students in the CEG.”

“The public information officer of the CEG provided only the details of admissions conducted through TNEA counselling. The officer has made a mistake and did not provide the entire admission details to the RTI applicant,” he said.

While explaining the 39 students who were found excess in ECE department, he said, “Among them, 27 were admitted under NRIs, foreign nationals and Gulf countries quotas and 9 students sponsored by industries while three students admitted through other states quota.”

“The sanctioned strength of the department is 180 and the university is permitted to fill up to 36 seats in addition to the sanctioned strength under four different quotas. But, only 197 seats were filled,” he added.

Giving the breakup for the total strength of the students studying at College of Engineering, Guindy, he said, “total sanctioned strength is 1290 and the university is allowed to fill 20% (around 260 seats) over and above the sanctioned strength under the different quotas. Through single window counselling, 1,195 students were admitted and 19 students were admitted through other states quota. Industries have sponsored 46 candidates and 118 students were admitted through NRI, foreign nations and Gulf countries quotas thereby taking the total strength to 1378.”

Making it clear that the Vice-Chancellor Convener committee headed by him had first raised alarm about the irregularities in the revaluation scandal at Anna University, the higher education secretary Sunil Paliwal said the state government has taken action wherever the irregularities were found.

“We have removed the dean of University College of Engineering in Tindivanam and the zonal officer following the irregularities found in revaluation at the Tindivanam camp. At the time, there was no evidence against former controller of examinations G.V. Uma’s involvement in the scandal. The directorate of vigilance and anti-corruption found her involvement after conducting the inquiry and the university has suspended her and two others,” he explained.
