After 6 months, Shiradi Ghat to open today

The road was closed in January this year for the concretisation of a 13 kms stretch.

Mangaluru: Ending the six month-long ordeal of road users travelling between the coastal districts and hinterland, the newly concretised road at Shiradi Ghat will now be opened to traffic from Sunday, 24 hours ahead of scheduled July 16 deadline This has brought relief to hundreds of people travelling between the coast and the hinterland especially between Mangaluru-Bengaluru who were forced to take alternative routes. The road was closed in January this year for the concretisation of a 13 kms stretch.

For the last six months, the alternate road via Madikeri (Sampaje Ghat) or Kottigehara (Charmadi Ghat) was being used to reach Bengaluru, with the onset of the monsoon making Charmadi Ghat particularly dangerous.

The demand to open Shiradi Ghat gathered pace after the June 11 landslide which blocked the road for about 14 hours and then stayed closed for two days for further repair.

The inauguration program is set for 11.30 am and would be attended by Public Works Department Minister HD Revanna and Urban Development and Housing Minister U T Khader, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and others. Minister Khader told Deccan Chronicle that the concrete works have been completed and ancillary works like guard walls along a small portion of the road which is pending would be completed in a few days.

Minister Nithin Gadkari who was invited for the inaugural program has communicated his inability to attend and has assured he will visit next time.
