Tamil Nadu: MBBS counselling postponed
Chennai: The students’ wait for MBBS admission extends further as the directorate of medical education decided to put off the MBBS counselling after the state government decided to appeal against the Madras High Court order on Friday.
The Madras High Court quashed the government order which allocated 85% seats to state board students in MBBS admissions.
As per the original schedule, the selection committee to release the rank list on Friday and the co-unselling for MBBS and BDS courses to start from July 17.
Officials from the directorate of medical education said, “The medical counselling is postponed indefinitely. The state government has decided to appeal against the Madras High Court order. We will wait for the outcome of the state government’s appeal.”
More than 43,000 students have applied for the MBBS and BDS counselling this year. A medical aspirant who has got over 400 marks in Neet and 199.25 cutoff marks in plus two exams said, “The state government should have got the exemption for this year a long time ago. Now, at the last minute, they are making efforts. The delay in medical counselling is creating stress for the students,”
He said the reservation for the state board students is justified as the syllabus is totally different compared to CBSE syllabus. “The confusion over the Neet exam had many students at cross roads. The government should have come out and clearly said whether the students have to write the Neet exam or not by the start of the academic year. Students are not prepared for the Neet as there was confusion,” he said.
“The students are willing to write the exam. But, before holding such an eligibility test, the central government should have ensured that all the state boards are updated with their syllabus for facing such exam,” he added. Another student who got more than 100 Neet marks and 198.5 cutoff marks in plus 2 exams said the state government should have reserved 50% seats for the state board students.
DMK working president M.K. Stalin and PMK founder S. Ramadoss on Friday charged the state government with failing to exert pressure on the centre to get President’s approval for the bills exempting the state from Neet.
Stalin said the AIADMK government had betrayed Tamil Nadu students and said the admissions had already been delayed. The students are confused if counselling for medical admissions would be held or not. The future of Tamil Nadu students had been sacrificed by the government, he said and described it as an ‘unforgivable betrayal’.
PMK founder S.Ramadoss said the AIADMK should have given a conditional support to BJP in the Presidential election, asking the BJP to get President’s nod for the state government’s Neet exemption bill. But it had sacrificed the welfare of Tamil Nadu students to escape from corruption cases, he said.
Now, the state government should exert pressure to get President’s nod for its bill or appoint good advocates when its appeal against the single judge order comes up for hearing.
Ramadoss said the dreams of rural students to stu-dy medical courses had be-en dashed. The court judgment would mean that mo-re than 3,000 seats out of the 3,377 medical seats would be garnered by the CBSE students, which wou-ld amount to an increase of 200 per cent compared to last year, he said and added that state board students would lose 90 per cent seats. He said the courts, which are concerned about the welfare of CBSE students, had ignored the harm caused to the state board students through the Neet examination based on CBSE syllabus.
