Nellore: Authorities set to end magical' drug sales

In Nellore officials seized Elissa syrup, an ayurvedic drug which claims to cure menstrual disorders. It is sold for Rs 3,400.

Nellore: The Drug Control Wing wishes to put an end to the sale of “magic drugs” that claim to offer permanent relief from serious health disorders. Officials are taking action against firms producing these drugs and booking them under The Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) (DMROA) Act of 1954.

The DMROA Act is meant to control the advertisement of drugs that claim to possess magical qualities. Officials in Nellore seized Elissa syrup, an ayurvedic drug produced by DNC Pharma Pvt Ltd in Ahmedabad, which sells for Rs 3,400 and claims to cure menstrual disorders, from a medical store in Nellore on Friday.

Officials of the Gudur wing, led by drug inspector N. Prasanthi, seized three varieties of ayurvedic products that violated the DMROA Act from the premises of M/s Sri Sai Srinivasa Medical in Sullurpeta.

The seized items were Dhanvantharam 101 DS Capsules, which claim to cure paralysis, disorders of the nervous system, and rheumatoid arthritis, Rheumacare Oil, which sells for Rs 600 and claims to cure rheumatoid arthritis, and Synocare Capsules, which sell for Rs 426 and claims to cure asthma. All products are produced by Sahasrayogam Health Services Pvt Ltd, registered in TS.

B. Suresh Babu, assistant director of the drug control department, said they had been keeping a watch on the products to prevent advertisement and sale of magic drugs. He said last year his department registered a case against Amma Medical and Fancy Shop in Atmakur for selling 12 types of Ayurvedic products produced by Hyderabad-based Ayur Green Herbals.

The products guaranteed an increase in sexual potency, and cures for asthma, blood pressure, diabetes, menstrual problems and obesity, among other things.

Mr Babu said they would hand over the seized medicines to the Court, as evidence to support their report. The Court will impose a fine on first-time offenders and sentence repeat-offenders to six months in jail.

He said that they had booked 40 cases in Nellore, Gudur and Kavali, under DMROA Act, over the past two years. He said that the Courts had pronounced judgements and convicted the accused in five cases, the rest were still under trial.
