No medical seats for guest cadets: Hyderabad High Court

Bench pointed out that it was unacceptable to treat students referred by eminent persons and government officials as guest cadets of NCC.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad High Court has directed AP and TS and the health universities of the two states not to give priority to students who participated as guest cadets in the Republic Day camp at New Delhi in admissions to MBBS courses.

A division bench comprising Justice V. Ramasubramanian and Justice A. Shankar Narayana was dealing with petitions challenging a GO issued in September, 2015 giving priority to candidates for admissions to MBBS courses to students who participated as guest cadets in the Republic Day Camp in New Delhi.

The bench pointed out that it was unacceptable to treat students referred by eminent persons and government officials as guest cadets of NCC. The bench felt that there was a need to make a distinction between regular cadets and guest cadets.

The bench observed: “It’s shocking that these guest cadets are imparted no formal training before being sent for the Republic Day parade. Giving them NCC quota seats is a farce.”

Justice Ramasubramanian said: “We do not know how such a category was invented and allowed to sneak into priority list that allows 1 per cent reservation. The inclusion of guest cadets into the priority list cannot be allowed.”
