M Karunanidhi hails Arunachal verdict

He said the apex court had impartially given the verdict with the objective of enriching democracy in the country.

CHENNAI: Welcoming the Supreme Court verdict restoring the Congress regime in Arunachal Pradesh, DMK chief M. Karunanidhi on Thursday said the apex court had impartially given the verdict with the objective of enriching democracy in the country.

Describing the judgment as a milestone in Indian democracy, the DMK leader said this is the second setback to the BJP government at the Centre after similar efforts in Uttarakhand. He said "As a party which has been raising its voice against dissolution of an elected government using Article 356, the DMK is happy about this great verdict".

Those who rule the Centre want to dissolve the state governments of parties which did not go along with them or take ideologically opposite stand. They want to form their own party's regime and the Supreme Court had taught lessons against such acts, he said and recalled the imposition of President's rule in Uttarakhand ruled by Congress. The move was declared invalid by the Supreme Court and the Congress returned to power. The restoration of Arunachal government had come as another blow to the BJP government, Karunanidhi added.
