Karnataka: Budget session likely to be curtailed

The Assembly session would have ended today had the Speaker took up the finance appropriation bill, after getting passed four other bills.

BENGALURU: The extended budget session of state legislature is likely to be curtailed in view of the ongoing dharna by legislators of BJP and JD (S) in support of their demand for Bengaluru development minister K J George’s resignation.

The session, according to the original schedule, was supposed to end on July 29. With no transaction of business in both Houses since Monday, the state government is planning to end the session on Friday or Monday after getting all important bills, in particular, finance bill, passed in the Assembly and the Council. The opposition parties had already decided to boycott the business proceedings in both the House till Chief Minister Siddaramaiah gets Mr George's resignation. In fact, no business had been taking place since Monday last following dharna by BJP-JDS members. All the important bills were passed without debate amidst protest by opposition parties. They have launched day and night dharna in both the Houses since Wednesday.

Sources in Congress told DC that if the present situation continues, the government has no option except adjourning both the House sine die on Friday. The Assembly session would have ended today had the Speaker took up the finance appropriation bill, after getting passed four other bills.

However, following directions from the government, the Speaker adjourned the House till 11 am on Friday with a small hope of opposition parties participation in the debate.
