MK Stalin makes vain bid to raise Sterlite issue again
Chennai: Leader of the Opposition DMK and party’s working president M. K. Stalin on Thursday made a vain bid to raise in the Tamil Nadu Assembly to raise an issue pertaining to the closure of the Sterlite’s plant in Thoothukudi.
Raising the issue during the zero hour, Mr. Stalin, reiterated his party’s position and insisted upon a Cabinet decision on permanently closing down Vedanta’s copper unit. He made certain remarks on the issue while demanding the government to pass a unanimous resolution in the Assembly to permanently close the Sterlite’s plant. His remarks were later expunged from the Assembly records. Declining to entertain his plea, Assembly Speaker P. Dhanapal reminded him that the matter was sub judice and hence he should not speak further on the subject.
The Speaker also said the government would disclose its stand when the case comes up for hearing on June 22.
DMK legislators rose from their seats and urged the Chair to allow their leader to talk on the issue but the Speaker remained firm in not permitting him to speak.
